Poem by Countee Cullen

By Countee Cullen

Incident

Once riding in old Baltimore
Heart-filled, head-filled with glee
I saw a Baltimorean
Keep looking straight at me

Now I was eight and very small
and he was no whit bigger
And so I smiled, but he poked out
His tongue and called me nigger.

I saw the whole of Baltimore
From May until December
Of all the things that happened there
That’s all that I remember

Isn’t that the saddest thing you ever read?  However, if you want to make your loved ones
happy send them a personal rhyme of congratulations for an achievement or one saying how
much they mean to you.

Try your hand at writing rhyming poems yourself or find a ghostwriter on line who writes
But if you want to share one of the most famous poems send this one.  If you want to make them cry,
that is.,
